About Instagram

Instagram is a social networking service where users are allowed to upload photos and videos. These files can be edited with different available filters. Captions can be written to describe the object as well as location information. There are different kinds of accounts available on the platform namely Personal profile, and Business account. On both accounts, users can choose to share information with the general public or followers.

Users can browse contents by using hashtags, location and trending stories. Unlike Facebook, IG users can have access to a profile by following.  When the account is private, a user sends a request. Users are also allowed to like and comment on photos and videos except when comments are turned off or limited.

When it was released, Instagram contents were framed in a square (1:1) aspect ratio. However, this restriction was eased in 2015 with landscape and portrait content given up to 1.91:1 and 4:5 aspect ratios respectively. Users can add multiple photos and videos in a single post. Instagram story is a feature that allows users to post content to a sequential feed which is accessible for 24 hours.

When Instagram launched, about one million users registered in the first two months, ten million in the first year and the community has over 800 million users seven years later. Facebook, Inc. bought the service for about a billion dollars in cash and stock in April 2012.
