OkCupid review

OkCupid, which initially launched in 2004, strives to be different from other online dating services. Whether these differences contribute to a positive or negative experience however, is up to you to decide. OkCupid is supported by all major mobile platforms although compatibility with Windows Phone and Windows Mobile is not yet officially supported: Android, iOS and of course Desktop.

About OkCupid

OkCupid uses a personality matching algorithm to determine the chance you have of connecting with another user. This is determined by answering an assortment of questions under different categories; Dating, Ethics, Religion, and Sex to name a few.

Summary

Our rating: ⭐⭐⭐

👍🏻 The good
  • Detailed profile
  • Matching algorithm
👎🏻 The bad
  • Quite expensive
  • Might seem to complicated
  • Not a lot of users
OkCupid Rating: 6 out of 10

Aside this, you also have your own personal profile, which is used to present yourself and show some personal flare instead of letting your answers solely exhibit your personality.

This, to me is a major pro of the service. Of course other dating sites have questions that determine your personality and what you hold important, but the unique thing about OkCupid is the amount and especially the depth of the questions being asked. Some questions are thought provoking and hard to answer, while others are quite superficial, like “Do you enjoy watching movies with subtitles?”.

The first thing that I noted when I began using OkCupid is the quality of the questions when I was asked to describe myself. I felt that being prompted to write as if my best friend was describing me made it much easier to write my true thoughts rather than rattle off a short paragraph attempting to not sound too cocky.

A con is that in my area, there were very few users, and those who I did find were not really ‘in my area’. However this can obviously vary greatly depending on your location, as OkCupid has 30 million users, 1 million of which login every day.

In-depth review of OkCupid

Signup process

Signing up for OkCupid is simple enough; you’re asked what you expect to find using the service, Friends, Long-term dating or just casual sex. After adding some beautiful photos of yourself, you are presented with basic questions, to give an initial impression of what is most important to you and what is most important in your prospective partner.

The whole process is extremely simple and fast. After answering a mandatory 15 questions, your profile becomes accessible, and you have the choice to answer more questions or immediately start browsing for matches.

From this point the service takes an approach reminiscent to that of Tinder, asking you to indicate interest in a match by swiping right or left. However, the profile also shows the percentage match you two have, which has been determined by the common answers you share, among other factors.

Finding the perfect match on OkCupid

There are many parameters you can use to filter users on OkCupid . Age, location, sexual preference, match percentage threshold are some basic ones. You can filter matches based on answers to specific questions on the Desktop version of the site. Subscribing to the premium OkCupid service; “A-List” allows for even more options to find that special person.

Communicating with users is simple on OkCupid . The interface is basic like any other messaging platform, with the added bonus that you may switch between your message and their profile without losing what you’ve already written.

Getting on the A-List

The A-List on OkCupid provides a number of serious benefits. There are two types of A-List: Basic or Premium.

Firstly, Basic A-List gives you the ability to see who likes you and views your profile. It also allows you to use more search variables to fine tune your matches. Among these main features, it removes ads from the app, shows if your message has been read by the other person, and allows you to browse profiles without leaving a trace.

A-List Premium gives you access to much better features, your profile is given priority and seen by many more people, especially during peak hours. Not only this, but you are shown to those considered ‘more attractive’ (to you) by the algorithm. Upon messaging a match, an A-List premium subscription moves your message to the top of their inbox. All these benefits on top of the A-List basic benefits are provided to you.

Pricing of OkCupid premium

The pricing for A-List basic starts at $9.99 a month for a one month subscription but a mere $4.99 per month for a 6-month subscription. Premium, on the other hand will set you back $24.99 for a one month subscription, but only $19.99 per month for a 6-month subscription.

Sometimes, looks are the only thing that matter

The user interface on OkCupid is easy to navigate, simple and appealing. It takes only a couple minutes of using the app to acquaint oneself with the options. Visually, it is inviting and soft, using cartoon-like drawings to illustrate concepts.

Final thoughts

Overall, OkCupid is quite a fantastic dating app. However I think that it depends on what the user is looking for by using the app to gauge usefulness. OkCupid goes so in-depth into your character and personality that it’s more likely to find someone that you have a great connection with, rather than a short-term hookup. If you’re eager for a one-night stand, stick to Tinder!
