WhatsApp Messenger is an instant messaging social media platform and Voice over IP (VoIP) service owned by Facebook Inc. This California based company is home to many of the world’s top social networking services, i.e., Facebook, Instagram, etc. WhatsApp messenger was developed and released in January 2009 by WhatsApp Inc. before Facebook acquired it. Presently, WhatsApp Inc. which was founded by Jan Koum and Brian Acton runs as a subsidiary firm under Facebook.

WhatsApp is used to text messages, make voice calls, video calls, send documents and other media files from one user to another. Initially released for mobile devices, its client application is accessible on computers. It is a free service that functions with internet connectivity. WhatsApp is a free social media platform designed to connect users using their cell phone numbers. This platform needs no email registration, all that is required is for the user to have a valid mobile number which then serves as the username. These mobile numbers are identified using the Country’s Zip code. Therefore no two mobile numbers have the same profile. WhatsApp also allows users to create rooms and add participants for group discussions. It also allows users to send broadcast messages to multiple users simultaneously. Asides individual chats, WhatsApp allows users to have group discussions, set up meetings and conferences on the platform. WhatsApp allows up to 256 users to be added to a group by the admin. Although there is a limit to the number of contacts the admin can add on a profile, people can manually join the group through the invite link which can be seen in the group info section by admins only. Group members can name/rename group, edit display picture, customize notifications, etc.

Audio/Video Calling

WhatsApp provides a Voice Over IP (VoIP) feature which allows its users to make both audio and video call for free (service provider data charges apply). This feature enables users to talk to friends and family, have face-to-face conversations, etc. even if they are in another country. It is cheap compared to expensive calling charges by service providers.

File Sharing

WhatsApp allows its users to share contacts, documents, pictures, audios, and videos. Users can now share documents with each without sending emails. You can capture moments, snap a photo, record videos and send it to others. WhatsApp allows users to share documents up to 100 MB.

Status Updates

This is an updated feature on WhatsApp which allows users to communicate daily moments with others on his/her contact list. This feature is likened to stories on Facebook and Instagram. It lasts for 24 hours. You can write texts, upload videos, pictures, and gifs using this feature.

WhatsApp Web

WhatsApp allows its users to use the application on a desktop. Users can download the desktop client application or access WhatsApp via a browser. Users can now sync all of their chats from their mobile devices and chat using the computer. However, the PC client application can only work if the mobile app is active and running.

End-To-End Encryption

WhatsApp has included a security measure in ensuring user security on the platform. Therefore, all messages, calls, and data shared on the platform are secured and kept between the parties in the conversation.


WhatsApp currently allows users to transfer money through a P2P feature available on the platform. This feature is however only available in India.
